The UROP gives two types of awards to support student research:
the Research Project and Travel Grant and the Conference
Travel Grant. There are two formal grant competitions each
year offering up to $1,000 to support a student's research project
or travel for research through the Research Project and Travel Grant,
and this may include a student stipend of up to $1,o00. A student
may apply once a year twice for this grant. A student may apply once
for up to $2,000 to do research overseas. The total amount form UROP
may not exceed $2,000 for this grant. Up to $1,200 may be obtained
for Conference Travel if the student is presenting and up to $600
if not presenting. Proposals for research and travel must be written
by students in consultation with a faculty mentor who agrees to support
the research project and/or travel. When awarded, funds will be available
for use for up to two years, or until graduation. It is recommended
that conference travel funds be applied for near the time of travel.
Students who are not IUPUI students during the academic year do not qualify for funds.
Faculty may mentor more than one student under this program.
Group projects are considered. Contact the UROP Director for more information.
Students need not qualify for transcript certification of research participation to apply for these funds.
Other requirements and elements of the project and travel grant program include:
- Students must be registered for formal research credit during each semester and summer session in which they engage in research. The Honors Course H399 may be used by students whose units do not have an independent research course number. The definition of research credit is be left up to the student¯s department or unit.
- Grants are solicited and administered in a manner similar to federal awards from such agencies as NSF. All university policies with respect to research must be followed without exception. Thus students must provide the usual risk management assurances where appropriate (animal use, radiation safety, DNA protocols, human subjects) in accordance with university policies. No funds are released without risk management assurances where needed. UROP requires that research involving human subjects be approved through the IRB. Further information on risk management is available from the IUPUI Office of Research and Sponsored Programs at http://www.iupui.edu/%7Eresgrad/spon/rescompcontent2.htm.
- Students may apply for a grant as many times as they wish but
may hold only one award at a time and may not receive more than
a total of $2,000 for a research project or $1,200 for conference
travel.
- Excess or unspent funds return to the UROP Grant Program.
- All equipment, books, supplies, etc. are retained by the faculty mentor at project termination.
- Funds may be used only for the project on which the undergraduate is working.
- Funds may not be transferred from the award funds to any other entity except UROP except for purposes stated in the budget. There will be no personal reimbursement allowed except by the Director of the IUPUI UROP.
- All students receiving this award must participate in the UROP Annual Student Research Symposium. Presentations may be oral or poster presentations. Awards will be given for best oral paper or creative project.
- Students will be required to submit a final report and a final budget report. The UROP will provide guidance for these reports.
- Conference travel funds are limited to $1,200. Students may
not exceed this amount but may travel numerous times.
