The UROP Fellows Summer Program is a nine-week, undergraduate-research program in which students can immerse themselves in research in their major disciplines under the guidance of an IUPUI faculty member. Students may be majors in any academic field. The program concentrates on scholarship, research, and related activities, because it is focused on preparing students for professional and graduate studies. Therefore, during the summer the student spends 70-75% of her/his time on research and scholarship, with the rest being in professional-development and recreational activities. Professional-development activities are designed to prepare the student to succeed in post-baccalaureate studies and to select a good match for such a program. These activities include research training and workshops about speaking skills, writing skills, presentation preparation, personal issues encountered during post-baccalaureate training and in academic environments, research ethics, interviewing skills, GRE preparation, and other activities that relate to future success. Students qualify to apply who are entering their junior or senior years, have a GPA of 3.2 or above in their majors, are keenly interest in research, and have not previously participated in this particular summer undergraduate-research program. Freshmen and sophomores qualify for this program only if they participate in a MURI Summer project (see below).
Students may become UROP Fellows in two ways:
1) Application to the UROP Fellows Summer Program as an individual student researcher. If the student has not identified a faculty member as a research mentor, the program staff will work with the student to find the best faculty mentor with whom to work on a research project for the summer. The UROP Fellows application form may be accessed here:
2) Application and acceptance to participate in a project set up under the MURI at IUPUI Summer Program. UROP Fellows assigned to MURI projects work with a team of students and faculty on a project designed by either a faculty or student team. Students may be majors in any subject area and members of any undergraduate class, including freshman and sophomore. These projects are posted on the MURI at IUPUI website. Students first apply to a project where the faculty director must approve the student to work on the team. Once accepted to the MURI at IUPUI Summer Program, and after completing the required UROP Fellows Summer Program application form and contract, the student researcher becomes a UROP Fellow for the summer. MURI Summer Program students participate in the same professional-development activities as other UROP Fellows who are not attached to MURI teams. Information about the MURI at IUPUI Summer Program and its projects may be accessed on the MURI at IUPUI website: http://crl.iupui.edu/muriIUPUI/index.asp
